Jack Ruby, the Masons, etc

found this in Don DeLillo's Libra, involving a story about Jack Ruby having lost part of a finger in a fight and its Consequences:

This was harmful to Jack's public image because he wanted to join the Masons, the Freemasons, whatever they're called, for the business contacts and the fellowship. But the Masons would not accept a man who was missing part of his anatomy. This was an ancient bylaw that they kept in the books.

curious as to how much of this is accurate (DeLillo read the entire Warren Commission Report as research / and i've found that - with Pynchon at least - some of the strangest stuff turns out to have some basis in fact).
